Description

Organic Elderberry Collection: Bob Gordon and Wyldewood
2 gallon sized pots
(Sambucus nigra subsp. canadensis)

This collection includes 2 elderberry plants grown and shipped in 2 gallon size pots. The collection is 1 each of 2 different cultivars: Wyldewood and Bob Gordon. The plants are young but will grow quickly. Do plan on protecting them from rabbit and deer while the plants are young.

Wyldewood and Bob Gordon are cultivars that are leading the way in elderberry production in the United States.  Wyldewood is from Oklahoma, and is one of the latest ripening cultivars available. Wyldewood and Bob Gordon (which has larger and usually sweeter berries than many other cultivars) can be cut to the ground each fall (after dormancy). This practice works well in zones 6-8, and they will produce fruit the following year on the primocane stems (new growth in spring from the crown). They can also be left to get bigger,  and will  also yield on year old wood as well. This is a good practice for growing zone 5.

Wyldewood and Bob Gordon will be around 6′ if managed exclusively for primocane stems.

This collection is good for USDA zones 5-8.
Elder will not grow in USDA zones 9,10, or 11 as it does not get cold enough in those climates for it to experience dormancy.
This Elderberry Collection appears under the “Self-Pollinating” category these cultivars will cross pollinate when planted near each other.
