Description

Galaxy Southern Highbush Organic Blueberry Plant

Galaxy’s most important feature is berry sweetness (Brix 12.5 at first blue, higher if allowed to ripen a few more days on the bush) and flavor. Selected by Dan Hartmann in Michigan, this cultivar promises to raise the bar on blueberry flavor.
Galaxy’s flavor, though, isn’t its only attribute.  It is also self-fruitful.  This means it will make a full crop without another cultivar present.  Galaxy is also a lower growing cultivar, with a mature height of 4-5′ high and 3′ wide.  This will help it to fit into smaller or tighter growing areas and make it an ideal container culture blueberry.
This new cultivar is a boon for the home grower, as it is one of the earliest (if not the earliest) southern highbush plants to ripen.  Ripening starts off with about 40% of the crop ready to pick at full blue, with a couple more weeks of picking as the remainder of the crop ripens…plenty of fresh picking for that morning breakfast bowl.  Galaxy also has a dry picking scar and has shown a long storage time in refrigeration without a loss of flavor.
Berries are light blue, large sized, and average yields on a mature plant is 8#.  Galaxy has shown good resistance to the soil borne fungus Phytophthora cinnamomi.  For growers in USDA zones 6-10, this plant is a great addition to your fruit garden.
