Talisman Highbush Organic Blueberry Plant
Talisman was selected by Mark Ehlenfeldt of the USDA in Chattsworth, New Jersey in 2005; and released for propagation in 2020. One of Tailsman’s parents is the Elizabeth blueberry, perhaps the all-around, most productive and flavorful heirloom blueberry in the US (this is my humble opinion after 20 years of growing Elizabeth). I can say without a doubt that Talisman has been a delight to grow and fruit. It is one of the best new releases in the past few years as far as berry size, sweetness, yield and ripening time goes.
Talisman’s Fae-like name was inspired by this cultivar’s yield reliability in frosty Springs; extremely high production of medium to large-size, sky-blue berries with sweet flavor; and vigorous growth reaching 5-6’ in height on a compact, rounded shrub shape. A mature plant of Talisman will average 11-12# of fruit. Fruit ripening is very concentrated (up to 90% of berries can be harvested in one picking). Berries also maintain some firmness at full ripe, so they can be stored in the refrigerator much longer than other cultivars. Talisman is fully self-fruiting, so it does not require another cultivar present to set a full crop (it does act as pollinator for other blueberries too). Talisman has shown high resistance to mummy berry. Ripening time here is mid to late July in Brown County, Indiana. Talisman would be considered a late, midseason cultivar.
