Description
Native Texas Star Certified Organic perennial collection
This collection consists of seed grown Texas Star (Hibiscus coccineus) from our farm. We have isolated two strains: one that is bright red, and another that is moon white. This collection comes in 2 types, the small collection that has 4 Texas Star plugs; and the large collection that has 8 Texas Star plugs. The plants of each collection are evenly divided (and labelled) so one would have an even split between the white and red variations of the flower color. IF you would prefer all one color (or a varying mix), we can accommodate that; but we do need to have a note in the order notes text box at checkout. We have a limited number of these collections this summer so we are offering some flexibility to the customer as far as flower color ratios. The default is an even split between the two colors ( so 2 each red and white for the 4 plug offer; and 4 each red and white for the 8 plug offer).
The Texas Star are shipped as a large plug (32 cell plug, so it is 3″ long with a taper, and about 1.5″ in diameter at the top of the plug). There is a picture in the gallery of me holding one of the lager plugs ready for shipping.
PLANTING AND CARE: Texas Star does not mind wet soils, and grows near pond edges and in some less well drained locations. It can grow anywhere really as long as you make sure to keep it well irrigated during establishment. I have found they really need a lot of water the first year. The more sun, the taller the plant and the more flowers it will have. These plugs planted now will get a plant going to establish enough root storage for the winters in zone 6b to zone 10, just be sure to irrigate and fertilize regularly. Adding compost is great when planting, too.
NOTE: If you only order the 4plug collection, and nothing else, there will be a $15 small order fee applied. Orders need to be over $42 to remove the small order fee.
USDA hardiness zone for this collection is 6b to 10b.
